Looking for a job is hard. I know, because I’ve been there. When I was younger and searching for work, I remember the sting of rejection letters, the silence after applications, and the worry that maybe the right opportunity wouldn’t come. It can wear you down.
For people with differing abilities, and for families walking alongside them, the search can feel even heavier. Too many job applications go unanswered. Sometimes rejection feels personal. Job postings can seem designed to shut people out with unnecessary requirements. And there are still too many stereotypes that keep employers from seeing the real value and abilities people bring. Add in the waiting, the uncertainty, and the sheer number of “no’s” before you get a “yes,” and it can feel overwhelming.
But I want you to hear this clearly: don’t give up. We need you.
As an employer and leader at John’s Crazy Socks, I can tell you there are organizations that will see your strengths and welcome your contributions. I’ve watched this happen again and again. The right match is out there, the right job with the right employer, and they are looking for someone exactly like you.
So how do you keep going when the search gets tough? Here are a few supports that can make all the difference:
- Lean on your family and friends. Let them encourage you, remind you of your strengths, and help you celebrate small wins.
- Remember you’re not alone. Everyone struggles with the job search, even people without disabilities. This challenge doesn’t define you.
- Look to role models. People with differing abilities are finding meaningful work every day. Let their stories remind you what’s possible.
- Connect with resources. Vocational rehab programs, nonprofits, and job coaches are there to support you and open doors.
- Join peer groups. Talking with others going through the same thing can lift your spirits and even lead to job leads.
- Take care of yourself. Rest, laugh, do things that bring you joy. Your worth is not defined by a single job interview.
The search can be long. It can be frustrating. But it’s not the end of your story, it’s just the beginning. The right job, the right employer, the right fit, it’s out there waiting for you.
Hold on to hope. Keep showing up. And don’t forget: we need your talents, your perspective, your drive. The workplace and the world are better with you in it.
