A Memorable Keynote the Delivered Hope and Encouragement

John and Mark X. Cronin, the father-son team behind Abilities Rising and  John’s Crazy Socks, recently delivered the keynote address at the Parent to Parent USA Leadership Institute, a virtual gathering of leaders who support families of children with disabilities and special health care needs.

Their talk, titled “Seeing What’s Possible,” began with a powerful message: there is possibility in each of us—and in everyone we meet.

They started by telling John’s story. At birth, doctors told Mark and his wife all the things John might never do. On his third day of life, John needed major surgery. Before he was three months old, he had open-heart surgery. As a child, John couldn’t speak and learned sign language to communicate.

What could become of that child?

As Mark said during the talk, “If there’s nothing else you take from this, let it be this: look at the possibilities in each of us.”

Because that little boy grew up to:

  • Become an EY Entrepreneur of the Year finalist
  • Speak at the United Nations
  • Testify before Congress
  • Co-founded John’s Crazy Socks, the world’s largest sock store, with a mission to spread happiness
  • And become a sought-after keynote speaker, sharing his story across North America.

John’s story is not just about one family. It’s about what can happen when we believe in our children and each other. As Mark said during the talk, “If there’s nothing else you take from this, let it be this: ‘Look at the possibilities in each of us and in everyone we meet.”

The Power of Parent Support

John and Mark shared how important it was for them to hear from other parents early on. “We didn’t know what to do,” Mark said. “We were anxious about John’s future.”

Other parents gave them hope. They shared their stories. They showed the way.

That’s why they told the Parent-to-Parent USA community: “What you do matters. You are changing lives. You helped us, and you help so many others. We need you.”

From No Job to Social Enterprise

When John finished school, he couldn’t find meaningful work. John did not become frustrated. He’s a natural entrepreneur, so he thought, “If I can’t find a job, I’ll make one.” He told his Dad, “I want to go into business with you.”

John and his father bootstrapped that dream into John’s Crazy Socks, a social enterprise with a mission to spread happiness and show what people with differing abilities can do.

They didn’t just create jobs, they created opportunities. Over half of their team has a differing ability. They’ve donated more than $800,000 to charity partners such as the Special Olympics, the National Down Syndrome Society, and the Autism Society of America. And they’ve become a model for inclusive hiring and purpose-driven business.

John and Mark shared the stories of team members like Andrew and Thomas, whose jobs at John’s Crazy Socks have made a real difference in their lives.

Inclusion Is Good Business

During the keynote, Mark made one thing clear: “Hiring people with differing abilities is not altruism, it’s good business.”

They talked about their unified workplace and the real business benefits:

  • Better morale
  • Better productivity
  • Better retention
  • And better recruiting

They also showed how any business can do what they’ve done. It starts by focusing on what a person can do, not what they can’t. It is about seeing possibilities.

A Call to Keep Going

As they wrapped up, John offered his advice to the crowd:
“Follow your heart. Follow your dreams. Work hard. Show what you can do.”

The audience loved it. Questions poured in about job strategies, inclusive hiring, and entrepreneurship. One attendee said, “I loved this story, it is so empowering.” Another added, “So encouraging. Thank you.”

Marsha Quinn, from Parent-to-Parent USA, said it best:

“Your keynote was engaging, inspirational, and appreciated.”

Final Thoughts

John and Mark didn’t just give a talk. They gave hope.

They reminded everyone that possibility is not a theory, it’s real. It’s in every family. It’s in every child. It’s in every dream waiting to be believed in.

And that’s the heart of Parent-to-Parent USA. No parent should ever feel alone. And with voices like John and Mark’s, none ever have to.
