John and Mark X. Cronin Inspire at the Together We Can Conference in Longview, Washington

John and Mark X. Cronin, co-founders of John’s Crazy Socks, spoke on stage at the Together We Can Conference, which celebrated individuals with differing abilities.

John and Mark X. Cronin, the father-son duo behind John’s Crazy Socks, returned to the Together We Can Conference in Longview, Washington, to deliver an inspiring keynote address. Organized by Life Works/The Arc of Cowlitz County, this annual event celebrates individuals with differing abilities and their contributions to the community. Following their impactful presentation last year, John and Mark were invited back to open the conference once again.

Wendy Keegan, a conference organizer, praised the pair, saying, “They made such an impression last year, we had to have them back.” Dave Hill, Executive Director of Life Works, added, “Their talk is so inspiring and uplifting that we wanted this year’s attendees to experience it.”

A Message of Possibility and Impact

During their keynote, John and Mark began with a poignant story about John’s early challenges, asking the audience, “What could become of this baby?” Their answer was profound: John has become an entrepreneur, a public speaker, and a changemaker. Together, the pair has built the world’s largest sock store with a mission to spread happiness. John has testified before Congress, spoken at the United Nations, and recorded TEDx Talks—all while demonstrating the incredible value of hiring people with differing abilities.

Mark shared an essential takeaway from their story: “Look at the possibilities. In each of us and everyone we meet.”

The keynote combined heartfelt storytelling with humor and enthusiasm, leaving the audience laughing, shedding a few tears, and ultimately on their feet in applause. As one attendee put it, “I laughed, I cried, and I left inspired.”

Advocating for Inclusion Through Employment

The Cronins highlighted their commitment to employing people with differing abilities. At John’s Crazy Socks, more than half of their workforce is comprised of individuals with such abilities.

“We’re not just talking about inclusion; we’re showing why it makes good business sense,” said Mark. They detailed their collaborations with schools and agencies to prepare candidates for employment, encouraging other businesses to follow suit.

John closed their address with his personal advice: “Follow your heart. Follow your dreams. Work hard. Show what you can do.”

Empowering Self-Advocates Through Workshops

In addition to the keynote, John and Mark co-led a breakout session on employment opportunities for people with differing abilities. Partnering with Jamie Stout, Disability Program Manager at Goodwill of the Olympics and Rainier Region, they facilitated discussions that provided practical advice and inspiration. Attendees, including self-advocates and their families, left the session with renewed hope and actionable strategies for seeking meaningful work.

One participant shared, “This session gave me hope. I feel ready to go back out there and find a job.”
