Spreading Possibility and Purpose in Boise: Our Keynote at the Western Partnership Conference for Human Services

John and Mark holding a microphone

On a sunny Friday morning in Boise, Idaho, John and I had the honor of speaking to over 500 professionals at the Western Partnership Conference for Human Services. Held at the JUMP Center in downtown Boise, this event brought together social service leaders, administrators, managers, and frontline providers from across the western U.S. including Idaho, Utah, and Oregon.

This wasn’t just another stop on our speaking tour. It was a chance to connect with people doing some of the hardest and most important work in our society. And we came with a message tailored just for them, a message of gratitude, a message of encouragement, a message to see the possibilities within themselves and everyone they meet.

We know the message resonated by the reactions during our talk, the nodding heads, the smiles, and the standing ovation at the end. As one attendee told us: thank you for sharing your inspirational story and bringing the joy to Boise.”

Look at the Possibilities

We started with our signature opening: sharing the story of John’s birth, the negativity, the medical and developmental challenges that came with his Down syndrome diagnosis.  We asked the audience a question: What could become of this baby?

The answer? That baby grew up to start the world’s largest sock store, speak at the United Nations, testify twice before Congress, and be named EY Entrepreneur of the Year. That baby could grow up to change the world.

And in that moment, the theme of our talk was clear: We need to see the possibilities in ourselves and everyone we meet.

From Bootstrapped Startup to Global Inspiration

We told the story of how John, in his last year of high school, couldn’t find a good job, but he’s a natural entrepreneur, so he decided to create one. He turned to me and said, “Dad, I want to go into business with you.” His big idea? Sell socks.

In December 2016, we opened John’s Crazy Socks. What started as a small test has now shipped over 500,000 orders to 94 countries, created 34 jobs (22 held by people with differing abilities), and donated over $800,000 to charities like the Special Olympics and the National Down Syndrome Society.

That’s not just a business story, it’s a story of inclusion, innovation, and the transformative power of meaningful work.

Culture, Values, and a Mission to Spread Happiness

We talked about the importance of building culture—not just strategy—in our organizations. We challenged the audience to focus not only on what they do, but why they do it. At John’s Crazy Socks, our mission is to spread happiness. And that mission shapes every decision we make.

We shared the five pillars that guide our work and showed how inclusive hiring isn’t altruism, it’s good business. A neurodiverse workforce leads to better morale, higher productivity, and unmatched loyalty. We shared stories of how a job can be transformative in a person’s life. It’s not just about income, it’s about dignity, purpose, and belonging.

A Room Full of Purpose-Driven Professionals

We closed by recognizing the extraordinary work of the people in that room. Social service providers face immense challenges, but their work changes lives and strengthens our communities.

John closed with his heartfelt advice:

“Follow your heart. Follow your dreams. Work hard. Show what you can do.”

The standing ovation that followed said it all.

Beyond the Stage

After the talk, people lined up for nearly an hour to take photos with John. I stayed to speak with attendees: trading stories, answering questions, and starting conversations that could lead to future collaborations. These moments after the talk? That’s where real connection happens.
